Never been here!
I have this lurking around so an early in the thread random

Alderney is the most Northerly of the Channel Islands and famously has a railway
It carried its first official pasengers in 1854, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Its main purpose was to move stone quarryed from the north of the island to build a breakwater in the south.
During the war, the pesky Germans changed the track to some continental fangled guage and it all had to be changed back after the war.
Little interactive map of the extensive line, ahem

Alderney was considered by Hitler to have huge tactical value. Virtually all the islanders were evacuated in 1940. Four labour camps were set up, one of which was the only SS camp on British soil. Thousandsof slave labourers died - its commonly thought to have been the worst place to be a slave labourer of the four islands.

Kiwi here is the main street, sorry it's the best we can do, it is only a small island
