This is the final stretch of coastline before we head in for a couple of days and go all touristy.
It's odd but I do like this place on a sunny day with nothing to do
St Catherine's Breakwater was built in the middle of the 19th century as the northern arm of what was to be a massive naval station. It would have been the largest harbour on the south side of the Channel after Le Havre.
In short, when the British government thought there was going to be a war with France, they wanted to build somewhere that the fleet could shelter. However by the time it was built, relations with the French had improved and it turned out that the bay was silting up and not suitable for new bigger ships.
So here it sits, a big pier next to a couple of houses. Great for haning out on a sunny day, people come for a stroll, fish off the end, loiter at the cafe - great!
And off to Gorey Harbour
The best gift shop on the island, I defy anyoneto come out without buying anything . It's also famous for Mont Orgeuil castle, which you can go round and is an excellent museum You can just see it on the right above and here it is
There's also a nice beach
