Friends of ours have just done this and this week have moved from a three bed house in Kent up to a 2 bed bungalow in Norfolk. They are both 10 years older than me but are near to Mr DBVC's age and are in almost into their 60s.
The stairs in our home already cause me problems with my back and the garden and gardening will no doubt become more of an effort as the years tick by.
I like being only half an hours train ride from London and all that is going on there in the arts and culture.
Waterloo station makes it easy for me to go and visit my family in Dorset for now.
Where Mr DBVC and I are now in Kent we are about half way between my sister, mum and family in Dorset and my inlaws in Norfolk.
OH's parents moved 18 years ago but didn't down size then. FIL then stated that they would down size in 10 years time. They never did. MIL doesn't now drive and FIL drives no more than a mile and really shouldn't be driving at all.
Both are now past the stage where they have the energy and mental health to find and move from the house to a bungalow. They know it would suit them both so much more than their large four bed house with a big wrap around garden.
My mum with my help moved down to be near my sister in Dorset in 2012.
So once our friends have settled in up in Norfolk we will go and visit. We wil try and size up to what we might need and want in the future.
I'm thinking I would rather go down Dorset way but Norfolk isn't as costly and does have a number of our friends who have moved up there already.
Mr DBVC and I love South Cornwall but it is just that bit too far for family and friends to get to and not easy for them to just pop in unless they are going to Land's End or the Isle of Scilly.
