Great news to start 2016 with

Our ES phoned from France this afternoon to tell us that he and his partner have got engaged. Hoorah! He took her for a walk on the beach near her parents' home and went down on one knee:(. He said that she said yes before he got the ring out of his pocket. We are so pleased as they have been together for so long and little GD is 18 months now that we had given up all idea of them tying the knot. When we asked when the big day is he said to give them chance as she had only just said yes. They never rush anything :D

Great news to start 2016 with

Squashed and Stunted!!

I was given a boxed Amaryllis bulb for Christmas, along with pot and compost.

Unfortunately, the poor thing decided to try to come to life whilst still in it's box and, when I opened it today, I found this insipid green, slightly phallic, specimen crushed at right angles against the box lid. I have no idea if it will straighten out before it flowers but, if it doesn't, it will certainly be a talking point!:D

Phew !!

Peace reigns .. sister and family now all safely in their own homes and OH and I are in recovery ! Not been on here much over the festive period so hope you all had a happy time (Amelica I'm so glad your Dad's funeral went off so well ) Now we have a New Year to look forward to so good heath and happiness to you all for 2016 ---- let's hope it's a better one for everyone.

It's Hogmanay!

When I was a child in Scotland this was a day of great industry. The women would be running around like mad cleaning everything and baking and wondering who would be the first foot, and the men would be keeping out of the way. I'm saving my big clean for when all the cards and decorations are down - at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

We've been invited out to a bring and share with some friends this evening which will be lovely and tomorrow lunchtime we're going to the neighbours for drinks and nibbles. If we'd been hosting anything I'd be running around cleaning and cooking so it's nice to be being entertained. I've made a pudding for tonight so I can have a relaxing day.

Will you be staying up to bring in the new year or heading off to bed?

Morning, up early!!

Up early and still dark, with drizzle! My OH has to go for blood tests this morning so it's breakfast after.
As some of you know my D is not well, yesterday afternoon she was taken to hospital with pneumonia, not good for anyone, very serious for her. When l spoke to her early evening she was all over the place ,just wanting to die. But later last night the drugs had started to set in and she was was not all doom and gloom. Not a good start to the new yr!!!

Thank you ladies

Morning all Thank you to everyone who sent me messages yesterday, either on here, email or text. Really helped.

I have to say everything went so well and we gave dad a very good send off. Very proud of ES and brother who helped to carry the coffin, with YS, niece and myself walking in behind them. My eulogy went down very well, everyone read their tributes/poems great too. We all composed ourselves until we sat to listen to "Smile" by Nat king Cole... seem to send all the bottled emotions off. But the exit music was the theme from F1 Grand Prix which made us all smile again!

There were some lovely flowers.. a large spray from the family, a posy from my GDs and some from neighbours. We decided that the posy was to go up to mum (never would know it was funeral flowers) which my aunt and uncle took up, ES/DIL took large spray to split up and put into vases and I took the neighbours flowers... they would only sit at the Crematorium and rot, so thought this was a good idea.

The Wake was good, lovely hotel room we had and food was excellent. Nice to sit and chat to family (over from America) and neighbours of dads. YS, Brother and niece came back with us and was good to sit and chat and reminisce over various things. I felt very calm throughout the day, with an inner peace knowing Ive done all I can/could have with a lot of stress and worry eased now. Not had a complete break down or cry yet, but sure it will come, when i least expect it. Will just enjoy time with my family now... my son leaves this afternoon, my brother tomorrow and then my niece here until the 3rd.

Thank you all once again for such great support and friendship. You've all helped me so much - the power of the forum is amazing.

There is a storm raging overhead (Bangor NI) as I type, storm Frank, which is destined to hit mainland UK tomorrow. This follows fast on the heels of Desmond and Eva. I don't see the necessity to name every puff of wind that passes over these isles as if they were buddies of ours with distinct traits.:D

Anyway at this rate we will hit Zebedee pretty quick - that is if we haven't all been washed or swept away!!

Priorities?

This links up really to the thread about spending so much at Christmas. I've just seen a piece on the local news about the number of people relying on food banks at Christmas and it showed a single mother with a five year old and a very young baby. She was saying about her difficulties of paying the bills and then having to buy food, presents and decorations, and so she's been relying on regular deliveries of food from a food bank - not just one off donations. The thing that struck me though was the nice furniture and the fact that the 5 year old had what looked like an I-pad - certainly a tablet. Now of course that might have been a present from a grandparent/absent father, or be an oldish one bought before circumstances changed, there is no way of knowing, but it did seem strange to me that she was talking about buying presents and decorations while relying on charity for food.

I know we had an upset before when someone dared to mention some people on benefits having expensive tv's, so I hope this won't go the same way, but what are your thoughts about this subject?

Is it just us or is anyone else fed up to the back teeth of Match of the Day being on morning, noon and night?! Have the BBC nothing else to put on?

It must surely mean that nobody goes to football matches because they can sit and watch it in the comfort of their home. It seems like there is no other sport than football.

It even seems to take over the news with constant lengthy reports about all the arguments with or about team managers. For goodness sake there are more important things that should be on the news!

Can't believe no-one is up and about!

Hopefully today will be the day we were going to have yesterday! Will pop into town, have a coffee, get a bit of food and may some knitting wool as I have nothing on the go at the moment. Dentist this afternoon.

MIL was a right pain in the a**e yesterday, so no surprise there! Her wound was fine and OH cleaned it - no blood, no nails sticking out. She has decided she doesn't want another operation and her life is ruined. Then a few sentences later, she is talking about when she has her operation, though we don't know where or when. She refuses to follow OH's advice, won't go to a good centre to have it done, if it needs doing. It is a wait and see situation, which is not prepared to do. OH can say/do no right.

So he is going to try and get her next outpatient appointment brought forward to before we go to Oz. She doesn't understand why they wouldn't have been working yesterday and why she can't make it when she wants it! We shall not cancel Spain at the end of the month. After all, her cleaning lady knows much more than OH!

A lot of her behaviour is attention seeking. She also thinks that someone will wave a magic wand and things will be like before her original fracture. She is also blaming all and sundry and she is the poor hard done by martyr.

Sorry rant over!!

Vile One makes it two years running

Yet again my vile sister has ignored mum over Christmas. No texts on Christmas Day or Boxing Day but then her son called to see mum & said that VO was in a stinking mood because her husbands family were coming & staying over. That's 7 extra. Boy did that make me smile. Today VO text mum offering to take her to Sainsburys which is literally two minutes from mums but she refused. So did she drive over to have a cup of tea with her at home? Don't be daft. She is going away tomorrow for a week with her wonderful friends so that will be two weeks since she's seen her.

Mum is nicely off but as so many of her generation she loves basic food. So what did VO get her for Christmas bearing in mind how generous mum is with us three & 6 grandchildren? A prawn cocktail, a tin of stewing beef & jar of jam!!! In a carrier bag no less which she didn't even give to mum. My mum adores reading so any book would have been gratefully received.

She did try grovelling to other sister by sending her a Christmas card but it was not reciprocated. We will see what happens next as VO is hoping to get another free holiday with the brother in law of my nice sister.

KK more voodoo dolls needed. Thank you all for listening....again.

Are the non steppers still wanting to drive the RV/isolation unit/ stable/champagne bar across hill, Dale, tundra, plain and plateau, on and off ferrys, through tunnels, anywhere except over a bridge? Do the lurkers still want to lurk, though de-lurking is much appreciated.

At least one person wants the lunacy to continue.

Don't ask where, I've nowhere in mind currently. Ooo, scrub that had a thought, * trots off to find a reliable map of the moon*. Could rescue that bloke off the John Lewis ad at the same time...:p

We went away for Christmas and had a wonderful time with great food and lovely things to do. When we got back we went to YS and DIL's for dinner and to stay over. It was our first sleepover in their new house and I got such a shock when I went up to bed as their guest room had a complete wall of sliding door wardrobes - with mirrored doors!!

Oh dear. At home I tend not to look at my whole body in one go ;). In my hour glass figure all the sand seems to somehow have settled in the middle. I think it might be time to resurrect my Paul McKenna book and get back on my exercise bike.

Anyone else feel they've lost the battle of the bulge?

Morning everyone

Hope you all had a lovely christmas and enjoyed the festivities. My DIL did a fantastic job feeding 15 of us!

It was a sort of respite break for me in between funerals. My friends mums was last Monday and my dads is tomorrow. I still feel in limbo, but was lovely seeing my GDs having so much fun and keeping me uplifted. YS also over from Spain and nice to have time with him. My brother and niece fly over today.

Horrendous watching the news seeing so many people suffering from the effects of the flooding. Its been so mild where I live, can't believe its December, yet half the country in turmoil.

Would just like to thank all of you who have been so supportive and kept my spirits up over the last month in particular, with your cards, emails and e-cards. I hope to bounce back to my normal jovial self, but thats disappeared at the mo.. hope 2016 will see a more relaxed me back.

I've been a bit out of the loop, news-wise, over Christmas, as we don't really watch the TV over the holiday, but I've just caught up with it all this morning.

My heart goes out to the people living, and working, in the area. I know that at least one or two of our Forummers live nearby, so I just wanted to say that I hope all is well, and that you're safe and dry.

It would be a dreadful situation any time of the year...but to go through this when rest of the country is having fun and relaxing with their families, must be soul-destroying.

Thinking of everyone today, who have had their Christmas ruined, and their homes and livelihoods wrecked by the floods. I can't begin to imagine how they must be feeling.

On Christmas Eve I discovered that my friend Frances had left me £42,000 in her will !
If she has family they could claim it I suppose, but I don't know of any family and I have known her for 25 years. She had a younger brother she was not in touch with. She said he was dead, but she lied a lot.I'll tell the solicitor that.
Nothing left to anyone else.
I won't take it as certain until the solicitor winds up her estate.That could take a long time I believe.
I vowed not to tell anyone, except my children but I can't contain it.

Amazed and Shocked !

Question for any gardeners out there

I've been planning the garden at the side for some time. I've got about a third of it sorted, the remaining two thirds is broadly planned.

The problem I have is plant height. This section of garden is about 30' x 12'. Sloping upwards about 5' overall with the steepest bit in the last 10'.

Normally plant height is simple ,- taller plants at the back, but this time do I keep going higher up the slope or level out a bit?

One factor to bear in mind is that it's very windy at times, ( the Mersey estuary is only 250 yards away) so I won't be planting anything too tall anyway.

Merry Christmas today!!

I doubt if many will see this as you will all be busy but just in case ..... Merry Christmas!

Got to YS yesterday. Had a good run down as we left comparatively early so the roads were no different than usual. A couple of their neighbours came round last night, which made for a very pleasant evening. There was a delightful lady, who is in her 80s, who was amazing! She has an observatory in her garden which is her pride and joy. She also went wing walking when she was 80 and hopes to do it again! She wanted to do a parachute jump too but wasn't allowed on medical grounds.

The family are all asleep and I wanted to prepare the veg but we have had to put it in the garage as YS and partner forgot I was bringing veg and the fridge is full. So it is in the garage which is down a frighteningly steep hill, it is still dark outside and it is raining. So they will have to wait.

So I am awake, dog has had his breakfast and I have had mine! The 3 men are all in the land of nod. Might as well have my shower now as there is only one in the house.

YS's partner's family are coming round about 1pm but not sure when we are opening presents, much to the chagrin of OH, who goes into 5 year old mode when it comes to pressies! Skyped the family in Oz last night and the GC were opening their presents. ES has put a photo on FB of us on the computer and the children showing us what they have! They spent Christmas Day on Bondi Beach!

I feel much more myself these days and am moving forward more than looking back which is a good thing. It is always best to look where you are going then you don't trip up:)

Hope you get everything done today that you need to and if you are very good I am sure that Fat Man in red will make an appearance in your Lounge overnight.

We went to the supermarket this morning (9am) for an early morning shop. They did open at 7am but half the bakery staff are "special needs" so everything in the bakery department takes a few hours to bring out extremely slowly (which is hard to understand by those who are not locals). Luckily they were just bringing out the bags of croissants and artisan sour dough cranberry/walnut bread so that was all I needed from them and someone was painstakingly making a tower out of the brittle plastic boxes of pavlova's so we grabbed one of those before some trolley mowed them down somewhat!

My turkey has not thawed yet but I do not mind as I did not feel like roasting it this afternoon which was what my son wanted, to have a Christmas eve dinner out of it. Tomorrow nights dinner is fine by me.

We have just had a lovely wino's lunch down the garden but I have sobered up again with a strong espresso.

Got OH to wash down the house as it is amazingly dirty with the current detour causing dust. Got S to mow the lawn and have a load of washing swaying in the breeze. Hopefully tomorrow is not too hot. Need to go and thaw the crab for brekkie but otherwise everything is on track. Need to open a bag of nuts in shells and the champagne is already chilling.

Hope everyone has a peaceful Silly Season and manages to stay out of trouble!

Have taken in a parcel for my neighbour today - it is foodstuff from a v famous London store. It says keep refrigertaed - fresh food. No one home, I cant get it in the fridge unless I open and unpack it. Its been in the garage since 4 oclock.

In a Quandary

Mr Rosa's elderly aunt, who has recently gone into a Nursing Home, has gone downhill, physically, very quickly, although she's still mentally very alert. We have been told, in confidence, that the reason she's ailing is that she has a very aggressive form of leukaemia, and is probably not long for this world. She is very tired and, as she has no immunity, is unable to fight infections. She has asked that only we are told about this; she doesn't want anyone else to know. She's been offered blood transfusions to give her a temporary 'boost', but has refused. She's way past treatment, and is receiving palliative care only.

We've recently had calls from close friends of hers who say that they've visited her, and were shocked at how quickly she'd deteriorated. They were berating the staff at the Nursing Home, and saying that they thought Mr R should be looking at finding a new one. Her recent, rapid, deterioration is because of her illness, not the care she's receiving, but we're unable to tell them that. We don't have any concerns about the Nursing Home at all, and we know she is settled there.

It's difficult...we don't want them upsetting the Staff at the home, or causing ructions, but we also feel duty bound to respect Mr R's aunt's wishes and keep her illness secret.

Should we tell her friends the truth, but break the Aunt's confidence? Or should we just say that if they have any concerns they should just speak to the Nursing Home Matron, and let her decide what's best.

In a Quandary

Good morning Wednesday

Just had to check my phone for the day! Things have been going so fast!

Saw MIL yesterday who behaved herself and had a nice carvery lunch with us at the local Toby carver. She said she had phoned her old school friend but has to allow an hour for the call as the friend doesn't stop talking about herself and Mil can never get a word in!!! Though we thought it a bit sad that OH's siblings not only haven't made the effort to see her but also haven't even bought her a present. Our present will be the only one she gets. But she has brought it on herself - a very silly woman. She will be on her own Christmas Day but that is her choice.

We ended up going out last night, though I was shattered! Some friends sent us a text to ask if we fancied going to the sailing club for Christmas carols. We had a good sing song (if what comes out of my mouth can be called singing!) and got back home about 8.30pm, so not too late.

Got to get the food today to take with us to the family. So might be forced to have a coffee out! Am not doing any food, think my stomach needs a rest before the foody storm! Then will get everything together in readiness for leaving here tomorrow.

Fraud and Frances ??

Frances was found dead this morning, found by her carer who called the Police. As her executor I went there at 1.30pm. The carer had removed all her food etc according to the Care Company. They left behind a Care Book signed three times daily by them and had a section of receipts.
On Monday the day before she died the carer had done her weekly shopping which included approx £20 of food plus £71 of cigarettes !(10 packets of 19 !!!Bought around 6 hours before she died ? The 190 cigarettes a week were far too much for her to have smoked.
No cigarettes in the house. Fridge empty. All cupboards completely empty. Not even a teabag. On her shopping receipt was also a jar of coffee at £5. !!! Gone with the fairies ?
There was no mail of any kind, but an Ambrose Wilson open parcel indicated a £39 blouse had been delivered the day before. Frances would never spend that on a clothing item.
Not one pay-in slip to the bank or post office. No statements from either.
The Care Book indicated she had alcohol in the house which also shows the carer removed it too.
I smell a rat ! Looking at past receipts there is no Gin on them. She was wheelchair and house bound. Who brought in the Gin to an alcoholic ?
She could not order goods by mail order herself so who has ? She could not write or make a phone call to order things.
I will contact the solicitor and Police tomorrow.
Not good for the stress levels.

She Lived and Died and Nobody Cares.

Frances (76 yrs) died today. Alone at home. No relatives. No friends. Born 1939.
Born very poor. Dad died in 2nd world war. Mum went out in snowstorm for food and died in a ditch.(1947)
Frances was taken with disabled brother to live in a small holding with an aunt who ignored them but enjoyed the foster money. She lavished love on her own kids. A jealous Frances played up. Aunt called the Police who arrived in a Black Maria and took these terrified children to an old folks home. A year later they transferred to a childrens home.
At 15 years she was unruly and prone to fierce tantrums. She and her brother were transferred to a mental hospital in Glasgow. In 1977 they persuaded the same aunt, now elderly, to take Frances again. Brother moved to unknown destination. She was carer to the aunt until she died in 1990, but could not read and had taught herself decimal coins.
She came to me in 1990 saying she had no money and was hungry. She ate my lunch ! DHS had stopped her payments as she had not gone to "Sign on", which she could not do because she did not know how to get on a bus to get to them and could not read their letters. (Which they knew !"
As a social worker I sorted it out and had her re-housed from a hovel to a lovely little house. I taught her to save and over time we redecorated and bought new furniture.
I was told to close the case but pointed out that she would slowly get into a mess again with no one watching out for her. Still told to close it but I saw her anyway !
I retired but still looked after her, Had her for many Christmas dinners and took her to the Coronation St set and Scarborough.
Over the last 20 years I had to step back as I became carer for my Dad, uncle and son.
She became alcoholic and had Altzimers. She always had a quick unreasonable temper and accused people of stealing from her.
No relatives, no friends.
She was expecting me over to take her for a lounge suite once the Sales started. I had wrapped her presents last night.
Today I am arranging her funeral wihere only Stuart and I will be mourners.
She loved to giggle and adored animals......and Stuart.
Spare a thought for Frances please. So few people did.

I love them more than I have hated them, though my mother did cook them on the soft side! I think they go perfectly with the Christmas dinner, giving them a touch of vivid green. If they are cooked well that is!

I won't have them this year as we are having a Barbecue with our family, so insead, with the meats will have Coleslaw and salad.

There are 17 cats and Christmas Trees. Ours liked to sleep under it like they were wild cats in the forest and ocassionally bat an ornament, so we usually didn't put ornaments on the lowest branch. I do have friends who have tree climbers.

We always dress up, although I rarely wear a dress or skirt, usually some smart black trousers and a nice blouse or top that I wouldn't normally wear and party shoes. Nothing too tight though so leave room to expand.......:rolleyes:

I had lunch with 2 of my unmarried friends.
One is engaged, one is a mistress, and I have been married for 20+ years.

We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door Wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes.



Here's how it all went.
My engaged friend :
The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my dreams. I love you.' Then we made passionate love all night long.


The mistress:
Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat, under it only the black bra, heels and Mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night.

I've been up all night worrying and stressing. I lost my job a couple of weeks ago and I'm trying to stay hopeful but it's so hard sometimes. Especially when the people who you thought were your friends turned their back on you. I feel alone and desperate. What do you ladies do when life gets you down?

I've just seen on the BBC news website about another veteran aged 94 who has died in Great Yarmouth with no family. He served all over the world with the RAF & lost a brother in the 2nd WW. It says that yet again the biker community will attend which is fantastic.

If you could would you attend to show respect? I know I would without a doubt but it's a shame these people end their days alone.

Very blustery here, as was forecast yesterday, not that I'm going out!

OH should be going to his daughter's for lunch and a pressie swap but I'm just not taking any chances of feeling worse or passing on my bugs so staying put. I will light the fire (logs) put some jolly music on and wrap and fill the stockings up with their pressies. I went a bit mad because all the pressies are tiny and inexpensive so I bought gazillions of them and they won't fit in the stockings!

Palpitations anyone ?

Has anyone any experience of palpitations or rapid heart beat ?
When I had my knee replacement operation at the end of September I was in post-op recovery for 3 hours instead of one because they said I had these during and after the operation and it took hours to get back to normal.
Since then I have had the same thing umpteen times so saw my GP about it last week. Two days ago it started as soon as I woke up, before I had even got out of bed, and lasted an hour.
I am awaiting a letter from the local hospital to have a 24 hour monitor fitted but it will probably take about 4 weeks to get the appointment.
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this ?

Walking in the Dark

I mentioned to someone today that, in addition to their long daily walk, my dogs also get a stroll around where I live, during the evening. Depending on what I'm doing it can be any time between 6pm and 10pm, whether it's dark or not.

She was horrified that I walk round the housing estate in the dark on my own, even though I have two fairly large dogs with me. It's never occurred to me to be worried, although I will admit that I'm sensible enough to avoid quiet alleyways and the area near the local pub.

Do you go out on your own in the dark during the evening, and does it bother you?

OH just came and asked me was there anything he could get me for Christmas.
Made me smile as he means have I got anything on my amazo n list .
He has never done any present shopping by actually going to the shops and is always a last minute man.
Plus he announced he has had a phone chat with his boss who said OH got a £150 per month pay rise.
Now that is something to smile about :D

Morning everyone
Weather is getting cooler again and guess we have got off lightly lately with the weather.. have even seen cherry blossom out!

Off to my best friends mums funeral today whom Ive known for 50 years. My friend asked me to do a reading on behalf of her and her brother and of course couldnt say no. Im still numb from losing my dad whose funeral isn't until the 29th. Don't know how I will react today but I'm sure i will survive. Its the journey Im dreading more.. down the M1 and M25.

Guess everyone is rushing around getting ready for the Big Day now? Don't know where this month has gone.

Want to wish all those who are poorly lots of get well wishes (including SOOze, Shezza) and hope everyone has a good day. This is the first time in months that Strictly hasn't had to go to hospital for her treatment which was gruelling. Hugs to you my friend.

We always have a bet in advance what colour the Queen will be wearing to give her Christmas speech.

My son has said apricot or peach shade. OH has said lime green or pale blue. I think yellow or perhaps red. So I think we have covered all bases but just out of curiosity what colour do you think she will wear? Freaky weather

Took the dogs out wearing a t-shirt this morning, very mild.

I really struggle with the it's all man made theory. Apparently the warmest December on record was 1948 with temps of 18 degrees.

I remember seeing an interview with a pub landlord, whose premises were next to the river in York, when the river rose and flooded a few years back. The landlord pointed to a mark on the wall and cheerily said, ' it's not flooded this high since 1765'..... Not much man made emissions back then.

The thing I find complicated is that there are explanations from both sides of the coin and as a layperson I think it's impossible to work out the science.

The tree in our living room has a multi-pointed, glittery, star, and we manage to get a fairy light to shine in the centre...unless the dogs knock the tree and it falls off!



The bigger tree, in the conservatory, also has a star, but it's quite elderly now, and probably needs replacing.

You know how I don't do New Years Resolutions but instead prefer to do one thing new or try something new every month etc. for the year. Also seeing it is a bit quieter in the lead up to the silly season thought everyone could think of something new they have done this year. Will start the ball rolling.

When I went down to Timaru and Geraldine early in the year we called past a recycle shop in Ashburton and found a lovely grey embroidery kit that I wanted for the canvas fabric alone. Brought it home and scratched the corner of the painted design and it came off (luckily) so scrubbed it to get the painted outline off and turned it into a wall hanging with mother of pearl buttons and petersham and lace designs over it.

Stayed in Kaikoura for the first time ever on the way back from a Picton and Blenheim trip.

Went to see a lovely waterfall I hadn't ever stopped at before for the first time.

Taught myself how to make a fabric covered button from an old tin kit of my late Grandmothers as one day I made a lace jacket and could not find a single button to match so it was a good time to learn to do it properly.

Made a witches winter solstice chocolate nut ring cake for the first time and it was yummy.

Stayed in Ashburton for the first time overnight when I went down to their Boulevard Day. As the trip is only about 1.5 hours never normally bother to stay there.

Read quite a few books that I would not normally read and actually enjoyed them. Mind you I have read so many biographies this year too and really enjoyed Mary Berry's biography as well.

Made double sided bunting for the first time this weekend. Something I have never tried to do before.

Restored and repainted an old table for the first time.

Joined a new online site which I quite enjoy.

Won't bore everyone to death with everything else but I am sure you have done some new things this year too.

Snotty Sunday!

Moan moan, week 2 of the flu and I still feel like rubbish! I should never have gone to Merseyside on Saturday but you don't like to let people down, do you?

I'm cancelling any arrangements for the next 3 days and see if I can shake it off by staying home. Nobody wants to catch it anyway, I'm sure. Such a shame that my first Christmas after retirement I should feel so grotty.

It's so quiet!!

Is everyone like me ,can't think of anything to post?
We've been invited out to Christmas lunch ,it turned out they couldn't get the C. Pud they wanted when in England so were going to do a (log) French style I'm not keen on them so came home (yesterday) and decided to make one. It's now happily sitting in the pan steaming away..A modern version of a 1953 pud from one of my cook books ,so, had no suet used half butter and half coconut oil. Agave instead of sugar and used dates, prunes,goji , papayas and almonds amongst all the normal fruits. Another story but l ended up with some malt beer, (the Jamaican's drink it ) and cognac. Even a Bramley apple as l had brought some back with me.tasted amazing raw so hope it's as good cooked. What is everyone else having.

Good morning all. Awake early as usual, despite the revellers last night waking us up at 2 am. It would be really good to have a lie in when that happens.Had a nice drinks party at the neighbours last night. Met someone I didn't know, which is a bonus. OH had met her walking her S and BIL's dog, whom Tommy plays with. Another lot of drinks at lunchtime today! It will be different people this time. Not sure how I am going to cope with all this!!You'll be pleased to know OH bought my presents yesterday. A lot of parcels so wondering if I should look for something else for him.Have a good one

As a few of you already know, today was my last radiotherapy treatment for cancer of my gullet. I began my treatment in earnest on 2 October after the diagnosis in August and I have had four chemotherapy sessions, three months worth of chemotherapy tablets and 25 sessions of radiotherapy to target the affected area. I am fortunate that it was caught before it had spread anywhere else, so this treatment was designed to treat this as opposed to the usual route of invasive surgery to remove the oesophagus in its entirety. Not a nice operation.

I won't know whether the outcome of the treatment is wholly successful until the end of March when I have a CT Scan, if it is.. then they will monitor me closely with scans and endoscopies over the coming few years. If not then it will be Plan B- operation.

For now, I am putting this on the back boiler and am going to enjoy Christmas and the New Year and consign 2015 to the rubbish bin. I have some difficulties with tummy pain but nothing that paracetamol and gaviscon can't cure!

I'm not much for highlighting my own health problems as there are many more of us wth our own issues, but I genuinely wanted to say a very big thanks for the support and kindness I've received from so very many of you, including many ladies I have never met, and of course, from those I have too. I mean it when I say that it has helped me on some days just to get a funny text, or a card, or a bunch of flowers, or a PM. Cancer is such an isolating illness and I promise you that every kind word counts for so much.

So I know it's a bit early, but I wanted to wish each and every one of you a very Happy Christmas, and a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year xx

Do you read these for ideas? I follow Boob Bub and Book Riot on Facebook and they often have lists or links to lists. Some are helpful and others not so much. Recently they had one for people who liked the book "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed.

and there are many for people who liked "Gone Girl" or "Girl on the Train" and from one of these lists I found Mary Kubica's "Pretty Baby", one I would recommend while adding it was a suspenseful book and other than that I'm not sure what the similarity to Gone Girl or GotT would be.

It's told from three viewpoints. I listened to it and the book had 3 narrators giving each character a clear voice, which I liked.

1. The husband who immediately lets you know he married a bleeding heart who has in recent years gone to extremes he feels he can't support.
2. The bleeding-heart wife who has recently noted a homeless girl with a baby at the train station in the chilly Chicago mornings. Of course, she must help the girl and that means taking her into her home.
3. The homeless girl, who's story we hear as she tells it to the investigator at a center for juvenile offenders.

I have a half brother and sister and recently my brother passed away.We are not a close family but when we get together things just seem to slip into place and we resume quite an easy relationship. I suppose you could say we have busy lives. I had known of my brother's illness and he had told me towards the end not to get in touch but to remember him as he was. On his death I rang my sister to be met with a vitriolic response saying I had not been to see him and I lived closer to him than she and she had managed it. I did not feel at that time that I had to explain myself. At the funeral she sat in front of me and gave me such an evil look that her own daughter told her to grow up, apologising for her. What hurt was during the wake she denied having a sister to a friend of mine categorically saying we never were sisters and never would be.She is 10 years older than me and although we were not close growing up we were sisters sharing things sisters do. I am now beating myself up thinking I should have been to see my brother and believing that I am an uncaring selfish person .My instincts tell me to contact my sister and explain and even bring up things that have happened over the years ,she never went to see our mum in hospital as she was dying as she hated hospitals and I understood, nor has she contacted me it is always me that lifts up the phone.It is making me feel quite rotten about myself but my son just says let it lie she is not worth it What do other readers think ?thanks

Afternoon all,

Been a busy few days after getting back from England. Loads of washing not enough line space. So had to bring the drier into use!
We then decided to put our plant's under shelter for the winter and my OH discovered that the mice had found the spare bag of bird seed, in two weeks they got through 10kilo's.! They are sunflower seeds not shelled so we had to have a big sweep up , it's amazing how much there is.
My OH's blood levels were all over the place, at least it made him appreciate how careful l am when cooking as l don't cut out much just careful with the ingredients l use. Even manage puds and cakes. Though this time it's gone back to "normal" very quickly. Not good with Christmas round the corner have to be very careful with "treats"!

a. This morning! Woke early, and decided to make a cup of tea. I sat in the conservatory, watching the sky turning a glorious shade of golden pink. If the shepherds are right, it's going to rain today!

b. July 2011. We stayed for a couple of nights with friends in Dymchurch. Their house is also a small B&B. We were there to go to my Dad's funeral.

c. Very rarely. I never cook breakfast at home, but occasionally have a full breakfast in a hotel.

d. Um...I hate to admit this, but it was Trucking!:o

e. Back in the Summer. Some beautiful white roses from my garden.

Just going through things on the computer before I make breakfast. Tommy has deserted me this morning and decided to join OH, which means he will be flat out on my side of the bed.

Nothing planned today. Nothing achieved yesterday. Lull before the mad build up to Christmas! Mind you, OH still has to buy my present. Think I had better remind him!

I do like my Christmas music and I have several compilations and a couple of mix CDs that my musical ES has made me.

I was delighted to read that Gareth the choirmaster has discovered Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You" which I love. Here are some others I have in my collection:

Several are very upbeat but that last one is relaxation in a box! Naturally I also have "Christmas Hits - 60 Festive Favourites".

I'm watching the CMA Country Christmas from Sky Arts as I type this.

I just want to tell you all how much I value your support even when you don't know you're giving it.

This year has been a very trying year in our household as my OH was off work sick for nearly five months but fortunately is much better & has returned to work. We started to think S would never walk properly again but now a year after he fell, he's nearly back to normal. Then my D decided that she could not sit by & ignore her principles at a new job she started in 2015. This ended with them giving her hush money to walk away. It's been a very difficult time for us all trying to support her as her anger was in danger of ruining the good things. Today she got a new job & it's the right job for her but more importantly she found the confidence to report the charity to the police.

Reading your posts & replying some times have kept me occupied. The jigsaws that a fellow supper club recommended as a therapy for fretting. The supper clubbers who listen & give advice but don't judge.

The night a few of us went to a supper club in N Wales & Bizibee was absolutely on top form & boy did I need that laugh.

May 2016 to be a better year but no doubt it will have it's own challenges so please forummers don't let these stupid spammers wreck the forum.
