The organisers of the festival, which is held outdoors at Kungstradgarden Square in central Stockholm, told the newspaper that there had been cases of sexual harassment every year, but that beginning in 2014 groups of boys and young men began to work the crowds together.
According to Peter Agren, who led the police operation at the festival this summer, the controversy over welcoming refugees and migrants to the country may have contributed to a reluctance to publicise the issue.
"Sometimes we do not really say how things are because we believe it may play into the hands of the Sweden Democrats," Mr Agren told Dagens Nyheter, referring to Sweden's right-wing anti-immigration party.
I understand where the reluctance to point fingers at migrants behaving badly comes from, but surely it's far better to say we had this problem with migrants and they represented a small minority etc etc. By covering things up or fudging the issue, it makes people wonder what else isn't being reported.
The whole Rotherham ( other areas available ) was allowed to go on for so long because those in power were to afraid of being accused of being racist/Islamaphobic when it was evident that groups of Pakistani men were actively seeking vulnerable girls out, grooming them and then passing them around to their mates, sometimes in different towns. Went on for years when it was known about.
