When I was growing up my Mum was forever telling me always to stand straight and not hunch my shoulders - this because when she was growing up to be as tall as she was was a bit of a rarity. She spent much of her teenage years trying to shrink herself by hunching her shoulders until it became involuntary and she became hunched (all this to hopefully avoid comments like "Is it cold up there?" or worse which upset her). Thankfully she never poked me between my shoulder blades to straighten me as a friend of ours did to her daughter which she found painful - it didn't help her either as she had acquired, as many kids do, what we call here a scoliosis (schoolbag fatigue) from lugging heavy books around in bags hung over one shoulder.
Since obtaining my computer I find it practical to have it on the kitchen table so that when I have a moment I can use it but also continue in the in betweens with other chores and cooking. As a result I have become a sloucher! I could have avoided this by using my desk in our bedroom where the chair is more appropriate and the height of the desk is correct for such purposes. I find in the last 4 years that I am becoming more hunched and achey across my upper back and neck and having sat sometimes for an hour or so that I have difficulty when first rising in straightening my upper torso. Brings to mind my mother and her words. I'm a lot less concerned about my looks these days so tend to just throw it at my age and say well it would have happened sooner or later, straighten my shoulders or not. My OH has replaced my mother and her words as he'll often come into the kitchen while I'm working at the sink and tell me to straighten up - I've come to realize I can if I want to but it takes a bit more determined effort to remain so. Does anyone else feel this creeping up on them?
How conscious of your posture are you and what steps do you take to maintain it (other than a listening to a little voice in your ear if your Mum was like mine?
