Zimbabwe is facing a serious famine. The ever lovely Mr Mugabe has said that it's down to lack of rainfall and sanctions on his government for human rights abuses. Oddly rainfall has been higher in the last tne years than in the 90s when no-one starved to death. As to the other, Mug\be, stop torturing and imprisoning people who don't agree with you.
The reality is that Zimbabwe had 5000 farms owned by white farmers that they 'returned' to landless peasants, that were actually Mugabe's best mates. Instead of at least taking advantage of the existing infrastructure the farms have been left fallow. Of the remaining 300 farms that are still commercial white farms, around a 100 are fully operational. Before the farm invasions , Zimbabwe produced 3 million tonnes of maize, of which it needed 1.8 million tonnes. This year it's expected to be 600,000 tonnes.
Ten days ago, Philip and Anita Rankin were removed from their farm at 5 a.m. and it has been handed over to Sylvester Nyatsuro, who was given asylum in Britian and now runs an NHS clinic. Nyatsuro arrived at the farm over thre months ago with armed men demanding that the Rankins hand it over. They refused till ten days ago when the power of AK47s was pointed out to them.
The UK government is investigating on what grounds NYatsuro was granted asylum along with calls for him to be stripped of his citizenship.
Some see these seizures as the division of spoils from the Empire days. maybe it is. But what use is it when those farms no longer produce the food to feed the country's citizens. The more remote farms also ran schools and clinics as well. All that has gone.
It defeats me that Mugabe cannot see what he his doing - I can only presume he is so blinded by his hatred for the white man that took land that supercedes the simple fact that it was made so much better.
